MR. JUSTICE REED
COMING RETIREMENT TRIBUTE IN TARANAKI A tribute to the work of' Mr. Justice Reed on the eve of his retirement from the Supreme Court Bench after over 15 years' service was paid at a complimentary dinner tendered to him in New Plymouth by members of the Taranaki District Law Society. Sir John will retire at the end of the year. Mr. L. M. Moss, president of the Law Society, presided over a large and representative attendance of members of the profession throughout Taranaki. There were also present Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., Mr. C. H. Wynyard, president of the New Zealand Society of Accountants, Mr. L. W. Louisson, registrar of the Supreme Court, and Mr. H. Gilmore Smith, a former registrar of the Court at New Plymouth.
Mr. 1). Hutehen, as the oldest practising member of the profession in the province, having this year completed half a century of years in practice as a barrister and solicitor, expressed the high regard in which Sir John Reed is hold by members of the profession. Mr. Moss proposed the health of the guest. He said it was with sincere regret that the members of the profession learned of his impending retirement. In Taranaki practitioners had always looked forward with pleasure to his visits to this Court. His unfailing consideration to members of tho Bar and his friendly yet dignified manner of conducting the Court had earned for him the respect and esteem of all practitioners who had appeared before him. On his retirement he would leave behind hjm, in the Law Reports, a monument worthy of a distinguished lawyer and Judge. Sir John expressed great pleasnro at being afforded the opportunity of meeting tho members of the profession in Taranaki socially before retiring, lie thanked the Taranaki practitioners for the good wishes extended to Lady Reed and himself. He entertained the gathering with some interesting reminiscences from his experiences in the early days of his practico in the Auckland Province.
