FORTY-HOUR WEEK GRANTED AGREEMENT IN CONCILIATION [BY TKI.KGKAI'H —I'HKSS ASSOCIATION] CII KISTCHUItCH, Wednesday Agreement on most points in dispute was reached before the Conciliation Council to-day in the application of the Amalgamated Engineering and Allied Trades' Union for a Dominion award covering mechanics and other workers in the motor industry. There was a long discussion as to whether the week should consist of five days or five and a-half. The employers would not concede a five-day week because of the amount of work offering on Saturday mornings. It was agreed that the week should be of 40 hours for all workers except garage attendants, and should be worked between 8 a.m. ai\d 5 p.m. on the first five days, and between 8 a.m. and noon on Saturdays.

Workers required on Saturday mornings must ho given an extra half-holi-day on some other day, and must have at least one Saturday off in four. In assembly works, the hours will bo 40 weekly on live days of the week, from Monday to Friday. Overtime was fixed at time and a-half for the first three hours, and doubly time thereafter. The hours of work for garage attendants were fixed at 44. Wages were fixed at 2s 2d an hour for a. 41-hour week, or £4 12s a week, with six days' holiday yearly. The wages of garage mechanics will be considered to-morrow.
