STOLEN MOTOR-CAR

RECOVERY BY CARRIER ENCOUNTER ON COUNTRY ROAD [BY TELEGRAM! —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WAIROA, Wednesday Smart work on tho part' of Mr. W. Harvey, carrier, of Omahanui, resulted in tho recovery of a valuable motorcar which was stolen from Palmerston North on Monday night. The police were advised yesterday of the theft of the car, a new one, and a careful watch was kept on the roads leading into the borough. Information was received last evening that a ear answering the description of the stolen vehicle was seen to pass through Wairoa. The police communicated with Mr. Harvey and asked him to keep a lookout on bis way to Waikaremoana. He had not travelled very far before he saw a big car overtaking him. Blocking the road with his wool lorry, he prevented the car from passing, and when the driver pulled up, Mr. Harvey told him a story about a breakdown, and his wait for a mechanic. After waiting for some time, the driver of the car, a Maori youth, and a companion of about the same age, became suspicious and tried to turn the car round. This was impossible on the narrow load. The.v then backed the car at high speed until it ran into a ditch The two youths jumped out' of the vehicle and disappeared. When Sergeant Clark and Constable McAlpine arrived, the youths had gone, and an all-night search failed to reveal them. The motor-car, which was only very slightly damaged, was brought to Wairoa.
