OPERATION AT SEA
ENGINEER ON LINER PASSENGERS' ASSISTANCE A successful operation on a patient suffering from appendicitis and peritonitis was performed by the ship's surgeon of the Rangitata, Dr. W. Miller, the day before the liner reached Colon. Tho patient was Mr. N. Sharp, sixth engineer of tho vessel, which arrived from London yesterday. It had been hoped to postpone the operation until the Rangitata reached Colon, but this proved impossible. An operating table and all the necessary equipment were available on the liner and owing to the fine weather and the lack of vibration it was not even necessary for the ship to be stopped. A passenger, Dr. J. A. Mathers, administered the anaesthetic and Miss D. M. S. Paslev and Miss E. E. M. Russell, passengers who had had training as nurses, assisted. Mr. Sharp was left in hospital at .Colon.
