PROTECTION SOCIETY

THE MONTH'S ACTIVITIES Tlio monthly meeting of the executive eommittco of the Society for tho Protect ion of Women and Children was presided over by Mrs. .1. B. Donald. Reports and other publications vcre received from the Rev. Father Colgan, at present on a tour abroad, relative to the work of similar organisations in England and on the Continent, notably tlio British Social Hygiene Council, the National Vigilance Association, and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. It was proposed that these should become the nucleus of a library of works bearing on the work of this society for the use of officers and executive members. Mrs. Bloodworth reported on her impressions of maternity and child welfare work in the southern centres. It was decided that a letter should be sent to the Minister of Justice urging the immediate appointment of women police, as the report of the society's inspector showed tlio urgent need for such appointments. A report was received from the sub-committee on maternity services, which, after consultation with various authorities and careful investigation of the position, recommended that steps bo taken to urge the provision of a new, separate and up-to-date maternity hospital under the control of the local Hospital Board. The executive adopted this report, and decided to send a deputation to wait upon the Minister of Health to placo this proposal before him. and to offer the co-operation of the society in this project. Reports of the secretary and an inspector showed a heavy month's work, 119 cases being handled during tho month, covering 676 office interviews. Of these, 16 cases were sent to tho solicitor. The inspector's visits to homes, institutions, etc., numbered 176, attendances at Magistrate's Courts eight, and at Children's Courts four. Maintenance money received and paid to clients amounted to £260 lis 2d. Appreciation of the free services rendered by tho society and confidence in its work is expressed by the everincreasing number of persons appealing for help and service.
