MAORI HOSTEL
HAMILTON PROPOSAL WAIKATO COUNCILLORS' VIEWS [from our owx correspondent] HAMILTON, Wednesday An appeal made by the district lioalth officer. Dr. H. B. Turbott, to the Waikato County Council for sympathetic consideration of a suggestion that a Maori hostel should bs erected in Hamilton met with opposition when it came before the council. Mr. R. G. Young expressed the opinion that it was the duty of the Government to provide the hostel. The ratepayers were experiencing difficulty in paying their rates and he did not sec why they should have to build the hostel. Mr. G. M. Watt agreed with Mr. Young. The chairman, Mr. J. A. Sampson, pointed out that if everything was piled on to the Government the Government would come back to the people for the money. Mr. Young: They will commit political suicide if they do. Another member suggested that the Hospital Board should undertake the scheme, and the chairman said that that would mean an increase in the levy the board would impose on contributing local bodies. It was decided to defer consideration of the scheme until further details were available.
