RAIDS BY POLICE
PREMISES IN CITY GAMING ACT CHARGES FIFTEEN MEN INVOLVED Six simultaneous raids on premises in various parts of the city yesterday afternoon by parties of detectives resulted in tho arrest of 15 men, who were subsequently charged with breaches of the Gaming Act. They appeared before Mr. J. Donald, J.P., who remanded them on bail to appear in the Police Court this morning. The charge that his premises at 213 Hobson Street had been used as a common gaming house was preferred against Raymond Clive Orange. Similar charges were made against Arthur George Williams, of 65 Pitt Street; William Thomas Osmand, oi 156 Hobson Street; Thomas Curran, of 115 Hobson Street; Nicholas Saunders, of 279 Karangahape Road; and Ernest Llewellyn Jones, of 73 Victoria Street. In each instance tho defendant was released on bail of £'loo. Charged with assisting in the management of a common gaming house, Joseph Dempster Cox, arrested at 115 Hobson Street, Walter Harold Downey, arrested at 73 Victoria Street, and Harold Heron, arrested ;it, 156 Hobson Street, were released en bail of £IOO. The following men were charged with being found unlawfully on premises used as a common gaming house: Cyril Edward Williams and George William Pettit, at 279 Karangahape Road: Anthony Katavich, Arthur Nielson and Siosi Seifer Kay, at 73 Victoria Street; James McGowen Kane, at 115 Hobson Street. Each was released on bail of £3. BOOKMAKERS FINED CONVICTIONS AT HASTINGS [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] HASTINGS, Wednesday Fiaes of £25 and £SO respectively were inflicted on William Gordon Robertson, aged 42, and Francis William Fitzpatrick, aged 61, who were separately charged at tho Hastings Magistrate's Court to-day before Mr. J. Miller, S.M , with carrying on business as bookmakers. They pleaded guilty. In the case of tho second accused, the magistrate issued a warning that any future offence would lead to sterner punishment. TAILOR FINED £25 COMMON GAMING HOUSE [BY TELEGIt/iPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday A fine of £25 and costs was imposed on Daniel Francis Hector McDonald, a tailor, aged 29, who pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court this morning to a chargo of keeping a common gaming house. Chief Detective Dunlop said that McDonald was arrested yesterday afternoon. At the time of his arrest he was taking bets on the trots being run at Addington. While the detectives were on the premises, the chief detective added, about half u dozen telephone calls were received. The amount of bets taken by McDonald during the morning was approximately £2O. He had been carrying on for about 12 months, and the bets ranged from £1 down to 2s 6d.
