[from our own correspondent] By Air Mail LONDON 1 , Sept. 12 Two enthusiastic women owners. Mrs. Corlette Glorney and Miss Dorothy Paget, were in keen competition for a yearling colt by Fairway out of Golden Hail at the Doncaster sales, and the price given was a record for a yearling at public auction. Donald Snow, who was representing Miss Paget, had to outbid several prominent owners before he gained possession at 15,000 guineas. The colt was one of the consignment offered by Viscount Furness from the Gilltown Stud. The first bid was the sensational one of 5000 guineas. Immediately the Earl of Rosebery raised it to 6000, then three people simultaneously bid 7000 guineas. Lord Glanely made an offer and after bidding had leapt to 10,000 guineas, he went to 11.000. He then retired, leaving the field to the two women, and the bidding went on to 14.000 guineas, offered by Miss Paget. Mrs. Glorney waved her catalogue to signify 14.500. This was promptly answered with 15,000 guineas for Miss Paget, and the colt was knocked down to her. Miss Paget inherits her great fortune from her mother, formerly Miss Whitney, of New York. Viscount Furness had a wonderful sale, his 13 yearlings realising 37,710 guineas. JOCKEY CLUB STAKES PRECIPITATION BEATS BOSWELL LONDON, October 1. The Jockey Club Stakes at the Newmarket meeting to-day was won by Precipitation, who beat the St. Lcger Stakes winner Boswell. Result:— JOCKEY CLUB STAKES, A sweepstake of £SO each, with £2OOO added; special weights; l 3 miles PRECIPITATION, Lady Zia Wernher's ch c, 3yrs, by llurr.v On—Double Life l BOSWELL, W. Woodward's hr c, 3yrs, by Bosworth—Flying Gal 11. .. .. 2 HIS GRACE, Lord Carnarvon's b c, 3yrs, by Blandford—Malva .. .. .. 3 Seven started. Two lengths; three-quarters of a length. In. describing the race for the St. Leger, the Hkraf.d's London correspondent states that when the straight was reached, the leader, Pizarro, was being hard-pressed by Fearless Fox and Foxfield, then Bosworth came through to take Pizarro's place, and eventually he won easily. The hopes of the Boyd-Rochfort stable had previously centered round Precipitation, but the colt developed heel-bug, and had to be scratched. The night before the rnco. there was a question whether Boswell was developing the same malady, but he proved well enough to run the race of his life. 1 The defeat of Boswell by Precipitation in the Jockey Club Stakes confirms the trainer's earlier view of the respective merits of these colts.
