"SMALL TOWN GIRL"
ST. JAMES' THEATRE FILM No modern actress has endeared herself to film-goers to such an extent as Janet Gaynor, who makes a welcome reappearance on the screen after a prolonged absenco, in "Small Town t*irl, the entertaining film which is to commence a season at St. James' Theatre to-morrow. As the heroine in a laige number of screen romances, Janet Gaynor has achieved many notable successes, but it is seldom that sho has been given a part so admirably suited to her talents as the one sho takes in this moving story of an attractive girl from a country town, who eventually makes an ideal wife for a rich young man who enjoys every benefit that money can buy. _ „ Based on an American best seller published last year by the well-known novelist, Ben Ames Williams, the story concerns Kay Brannan, who lives in the sleepy little town of Carvel, between Boston and New Haven. Dissatisfied with her somewhat dreary and monotonous life, the young woman longs to become a part of the merry throng of holiday-makers endlessly passing through her homo town, and after a series of adventures with a handsome young surgeon, whom she meets by chance after a football game, her dream comes true. . Although Kay is able to enjoy all the things she craved after, she realises that her husband is kind to her only out of sympathy. When sho discovers lie was already engaged to another voune woman whose social position was equivalent to his own, her unhappincss is greatly deepened, and sire decides to return to her home.' Before she leaves Boston, however, she is the means of giving her husband the greatest opportunity of his career and because of, this he finally comes to understand her better. . •, Playing opposite Miss Gaynor in the part of the young surgeon, Robert Taylor is outstanding. Throughout th© film his handling of the .romantic interest with the heroine is excellently done, and the combination of these two popular players in a new romantic team speaks liighlv for the skill of tho direction. There'is a talented supporting cast, including Binriie Barnes, Lewis Stone, Elizabeth Patterson aiicl Jajnes Stewart. ,
