STARVED TO DEATH
FATE OF MAORI WOMAN GRIEF AT LOSS OF CHILD REFUSED FOOD FOR TWO WEEKS [from our own correspondent] FUKEKOHE. Wednesday At an inquest held by the district coroner, Mr. C. K. Lawrio, J.P., into the death on Sunday at Ptikekohe Hill of <a Maori woman, Ngihi Ngihi Te Riri, aged G4, it was disclosed that following the death of a granddaughter a fortnight previously, the deceased had refused to take food or nourishment. She had gradually becomo weaker until she died. Evidence was given by the husband, Pehi Tu Terei, that deceased lived with him and their only daughter and son-in-law. The child who died was an only grand-daughter, agod about two years. He and the other members of the household tried to persuade deceased to eat, but she refused. She would take only water. The coroner asked why a nurse or doctor was not called. The reply was that deceased was in no pain. The coroner returned a verdict that 1 death was duo to heart failure following acute starvation self-imposed.
