MARIST BACKS EXCEL

VICTORY OVER RICHMOND ' Marist caused a mild surprise by easily defeating Richmond in a fast, open game. In the first half, play was interesting and evenly contested, although it favoured Richmond. Neither team scored any points in this half. On one occasion, however, Aro got over, but was unable to ground the ball. Early in the second half, the Marist backs played good football and speed played a big part in several nice movements. A fine run down the sideline, by Loader, gave Baka'ich an easy try. A few minutes later, the Marist forwards, with Serra and Anderson prooiinent, beat the defence badly and the latter scored. Dashing play by Haslam and Fletcher cut the defence to ribbons and Richmond was forced to defend. Several forwards of both teams were cautioned for fighting, aud for a little time feeling ran high. Good play by Murdock, who made a nice opening, gave Anderson his second try. In the last fow minutes. Powell cleverly worked tbe blind side and Bickerton scored. On the run of play Marist was easily tho better team, and its form compared very favourablv, with tho best seen lately. For Marist, Flefcher made some nice runs and he and Loader were the best of tho backs. Haslam 'did useful work both on attack and in defehce. Murdock was also prominent and gives promise of making a good attacking brick. Glover played a sound game at fullback, while Aro was outstanding behind the scrum. Anderson and Bakalich were tho pick ot the forwards. Serra also played a good game. For Richmond, W. Titlleton and Bickerton were prominent among the backs. Tctley, rcntrc-thrcequarter. also played a good garno. Davis, Telford and Broadhcad were tho best of tho forwards. >
