OBITUARY
M. OSSIP G ABRILOWITCH
PIANIST AND CONDUCTOR (Received September 15, 5.5 p.m.) DETROIT, Sept. 14 The death has occurred of the Russian pianist and conductor, M. Ossip Gabrilowitch.
The late M. Gabrilowitch was born in February, 1878, at Petrograd. From 1888 to 1894 he studied at the Conservatoire there as a pupil of Anton Rubinstein, and on the completion of his course at the age of 16, he was awarded the Rubinstein Prize. He then went to Vienna for further training. In 1896 he began to appear at concerts as a solo pianist and he met with great success in Europe. The outbreak of the World War finally drove M. Gabrilowitch to America, where he has lived ever since, making a great name for himself both as a pianist and a conductor, and also composing for tho piano. He settled at Detroit and fouuded and directed the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. M. Gabrilowitch married Miss Clara Clemens, a daughter of Mark Twain. When the great humorist heard of the engagement ho said: "Now I shall have to spend the rest of my life learning this name by heart."
