PROTECTION SOCIETY
SOCIAL WELFARE WORK The monthly executive meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children was held recently at the society's offices, the chair being taken by Mr. Donaldson in the unavoidable absence of the chairman, Mr. J. B. Donald.
The members stood in silence to express their regret at the death of one of their number, the late Mrs. Nielson, who had worked ardentl.v for the society for many years. Reports from the secretary and inspector showed a total of 102 cases dealt with during the month. It was decided that the society's recommendations for- the amendment of the Child Welfare Act should again be referred to the Government, with a request that a deputation be received on this question. The conditions of detention of female prisoners was the subject of discussion, and a committee was asked to report. In regard to the recommendations ou State maternity services submitted to the Minister of Health, a reply had been received covering a report by the medical officers of the Health Department on the obstetric methods of the St. Helens Hospitals, particularly in connection with the administration of chloroform by midwives.
