WOMEN'S DIVISION

Waiau Pa. —There was a good attendance at the recent meeting of the branch. The president welcomed two new members. Mrs. H. Smith and Miss M. Suter tied for first place in the senior coiyjietition for a jar of apricot jam, Mrs. A. S. Cole was second and Miss F. Suter third. The junior competition, for a plain sponge, was won by Miss B. Cole, with Miss B. Kettle second. A very enjoyable entertainment was provided by Mrs. Kettle, Mrs. D. K. Clark and Miss P. Bell, the social trio for the month. Afternoon tea was served by the junior members. Mauku.—The Mauku branch celebrated its third birthday recently. A feature of the afternoon was an address by Miss Spicer entitled "Early Ways in Early Days." There was an interesting parade of frocks worn between 1828 and 1878, while appropriate music was played by Mrs. F. J. Townsborough. Afternoon tea was served by members. Competitions were won by Mrs. Hodgkinson (Glenbrook) and Mrs. Duke (Puni). " Pukekohe. —At the September meeting, at which there was a good attendance, Mrs. R. C. Clark (Paerata) gave an interesting account of the proceedings at the annual conference in Wellington. Mrs. Wymer was first and Mrs. Elliott second in the competition for a pot of marmalade. The amusement competition arranged by Mrs. Wymer was won by Mrs. R. C. Clark. The exchange table was well laden, and everything was sold. Afternoon tea brought the meeting to a close. Opotiki.—The fifth birthday of the Opotiki branch of the division was celebrated in the parish hall. There was a large attendance of members and friends. Mrs. Martin, in a brief speech, welcomed the visitors, and a pleasant time was spent in dancing, interspersed with musical items. Items were contributed by Mrs. Shaw, Mrs. Walker, Mr. Booth, Mr. Wingate, Miss E. Hennessy, Mr. H. Warrington, Misses M. and J. Maxwell, Mrs. Cave, Mr. McDougall and Miss Lambert. After supper had been served Mrs. A. E. Martin, president, cut the birthday cake.

Wliangarei.—Mrs. A. C. M. Finlayson presided over an excellent attendance of members ancl friends at a recent meeting. New members and visitors from Hokianga were welcomed. It was decided to hold a social afternoon at the next meeting, as it will be the second anniversary of the branch. The sympathy of the branch was extended to Mrs.' Biggar, who is in hospital. Mesdames Pawson, Evans and Miss Horrobin were in charge of afternoon tea. iirigham's Creek.—The president, Mrs. Parr, welcomed Mr. F. Cullen, who gave an interesting lecture on horticulture. The competition for the best arranged vase of flowers resulted in Mrs. Woolf being first and Mrs. J. Sinton second. This was judged by Mr. Cullen. Prizes also were won by Mrs. Woolf and Mrs. J. Sinton for the best article made from a shilling's worth of material. The meeting closed with Mrs. Kennedy, Mrs. E. Sandford and Mrs. Woolf serving afternoon tea. Auckland.—The monthly report of tho branch was recently held. The president, Mrs. J. T. F. Mitchell, made reference to the loss sustained by the branch in the passing of two valued members, Mrs. John Cook and Mrs. N. Neilsen. Those present stood in silence as a mark of respect. Two new members were welcomed, also visitors from the Dargaville branch. Mrs. 11. S. Judson was appointed delegate to the Auckland branch of tho National Coun.cil of Women. Mrs. J. Henderson was appointed convener of the recentlyformed dramatic circle. Miss E. Scott reported on visits paid to country members who had been inmates of the hospital recently. Mrs. L. Mitchell was appointed to the hospital visiting committee. Arrangements were made for the branch birthday which is to be held later in the year. Brookby.—Mrs. Kimpton presided at the meeting held recently. Four new members were enrolled. The roll call was "What I should do if I won £4000." A demonstration of decorative cake-icing was given by Mrs. H. Embling and was much appreciated. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses for the afternoon.
