WATER FOR LOCOMOTIVES
WASTAGE SAVING DEVICE COMPANY'S HUGE YEARLY BILL It is estimated that 3,675,000 gallons of water are being saved every day- on the London, Midland and Scottish Railway as the result of the fitting of a simple addition to locomotives equipped for taking up water from track-troughs while travelling at full speed. A deflector-plate which hias been fitted in front of 'the pick-up scoop, by directing the water from the sides of the trough toward the centre causes an artificial increase in the height of the waiter near the scoop mouthpiece and so increases by 200 gallons the amount , of water* it is possible to pick up at each lift. This device, \tfiich reduces by about half the amount of water wasted through being spilled at water-troughs, is part of a campaign to reduce the company's annual bill of £300,000 for water used for locomotive purposes.
