YOUNG WORKERS
PROBLEM OF AGE READJUSTMENT HINTED A hint that something may be done by the Government to deal with the tendency of employers to engage boys and girls at an earlier age than formerly was given by the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, in an election address at Onehunga last night. After referring to the large numbers of young people who had lately been absorbed into industry, Mr. Fraser said that, admittedly, some of them were taking up work at rather too early an age and some employers werfe taking advantage of present conditions. They said that they had to engage boys and girls early because of the higher rates of wages payable at the age of 21. "There may be need for a readjustment in the interests of older boys and girls," added the Minister, "but that can be done."
