TRAGEDY AVERTED
MAN ON RAILWAY BRIDGE EXPRESS STOPPED IN TIME [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] PALMERSTON NORTH, Sunday Prompt braking by tho driver of the Wellington-Auckland express on the bridge at Longburn on Friday night, provented tho train from running over an elderly man, who was • crawling over the sleepers. It was found that the man was suffering from loss of memory and had been missing for some hours from the Old. People's Home at' Pafmorston North. Tragedy was averted by a very narrow margin. The heavy train had just reached the bridge when the driver saw the man crawling on his hands and knees from sleeper to sleeper. The engine was pulled up not more than 10 yards from the man. He was subsequently taken to Palmerston North.
