SALE OF KANNA
JAPANESE BUYERS ■ ■■ ■ . s STEAMER TO BE BROKEN UP PREPARING FOR LAST VOYAGE The Union Company's cargo steamer Kanna has been sold to Japanese buyers and it is understood that she is to be converted into scrap metal in Japan. A Japanese crew will reach Auckland about the end of this month to take the vessel to Japan. -
The Kanna is a steel steamer of 1948 tons gross and was built at Leith, Scotland, in 1911. She has been utilised principally in the company's inter-colonial trade and on the New Zealand coast. She has also made a number of trips to Walpole Island to load guano for New Zealand. During the war she was taken over by the Government and used as a fleet auxiliary in the Pacific. Since April 9 she lias been laid up in the stream at Auckland. The steamer was removed on Saturday to the western viaduct to refit for what is to be her last voyage.
