ENTERTAINMENTS

MAJESTIC THEATRE Large audiences continue to ho attracted to the Majestic Theatre, where the New Zealand Film Guild's production, " On the Friendly Road," is now in the second week of a very successful season. Some interesting pictures of the first Rugby test between Australia and New Zealand, played at Wellington on Saturday, also aro being shown. CIVIC THEATRE Adapted from Ouida's well-known story of the Foreign Legion, " Under Two Flags," the current attraction at the Civic Theatre, recaptures all the delightful spirit of romance and adventure which proved so successful in the novel. The film has been excellently produced and skilfully directed, and the scenes of desert life and the activities of the legionaires are outstanding. Ronald Colman, in the leading role, gives one of the finest portrayals of his career, while Claudette Colbert, who plays opposite him, is equally good. REGENT THEATRE Thrilling entertainment is presented in the exciting spy story, " Till We Meet Again," which is being shown to crowded audiences at the Regent Theatre, Herbert Marshall, as an English actor who becomes an officer in the British Intelligence Service, and Gertrude Michael, as a German agent, have the leading roles. Lionel Atwill heads a talented supporting cast.

ST. JAMES* THEATRE An entertaining story of a wealthy American business man, whose wife is perturbed at the attentions paid him by his attractive secretary, is presented in the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer production, " Wife Versus Secretary," which heads the current programme at St. James' Theatre. Clark Gable takes the part of the business man, while Myrna Loy and Jean Harlow are seen as the wife and the secretary, respectively. An interesting selection of shorter films also is being shown. PLAZA THEATRE Taking full advantage of the many opportunities for her wonderful voice, the celebrated operatic soprano Grace Moore gives one of her most attractive performances in " The King Steps Out," which is now in the third week of a very successful season at the Plaza Theatre. Franchot Tone also is prominently cast, while Walter Connolly as a beer-drinking Austrian nobleman, gives one of the most amusing performances of his career. An entertaining selection of shorter films, including an Andy Clyde comedy and a coloured cartoon, also is shown. TIVOLI THEATRE Another excellent programme will be presented at the Tivoli Theatre to-night, when the popular guest night concessions will bo available. "I've Got Your Number," the main attraction, is notable for the appearance of the popular Pat O'Brien and Joan Blondell in the leading roles. Alan Jenkins heads a talented supporting cast. George Brent and Lois Wilson are seen together in "Female," the second film. An entertaining selection of shorter films, including a cartoon and a comedy entitled "That Goes Double," also will be shown.

EMBASSY THEATRE The beautiful Russian actress Anna Sten, and the handsome Henry Wilcoxon are seen together in the dramatic film, " V A Woman Alone," which heads the programme now being presented at the Embassy Theatre. Baser! on a Russian novel, the .film is marked by all the deep emotionalism which strikes a predominant note in, Russian life. Commencing on Thursday, " Faial Lady," in which the Metropolitan opera singer Mary Ellis appears, will be shown. Walter Pidgeon, Norman Foster, Allan Mowbray and John Halliday also have prominent roles. PRINCE EDWARD THEATRE A delightful blend of music, comedy and romance is presented in "Take a Chance," the main attraction on the excellent programme to be presented at the Prince Edward Theatre to-night, when guest night concessions will be available. James Dunn, June Knight and Lilian Roth, have the leading roles. "Search for Beauty," in which Larry Crabbe, Robert Armstrong and Ida Lupino appear, also is being shown.

NATIONAL THEATRE An intensely moving drama, depicting the efforts of America's famous " G Men " to rid their country of organised crime, is presented in "Human Cargo," which heads the current programme at tho National Theatre. Claire Trevor, Brian Donlevy and Ralph Morgan are the players. Also on the same programme is the entertaining musical film, " Redheads On Parade!" STRAND THEATRE In a story which gives her full scope for the introduction of the cheerful song and dance numbers which have won her wide popularity with film-goers, the delightful child actress Shirley Temple, is seen at her best in " Poor Little Rich Girl," the main attraction at tho Strand Theatre. The supporting cast includes Alice Faye, Jack Haley and Gloria Stuart.

STATE THEATRE Thoroughly enjoyable light entertainment is presented in the highly diverting comedy film, "Tho Bohemian Girl," tho current attraction at the State Theatre. Tho inimitable comedians Laurel and Hardy have the leading roles and there is a talented cast of supporting players. Tho singing of several famous songs from the opera greatly enhances tho iippeal of. the film. STATE THEATRE, DEVONPORT " You Said a Mouthful " and " Central Park " are tho films to bo shown at the State Theatre, Deronport, to-night, when guest night concessions will ho availablo. STATE THEATRE, ONEHUNGA " Handy Andy " and " Mayor of Hell " compriso the guest night programme at the State 'lheatre, Onohunga, to-night. CRYSTAL PALACE AND RIALTO Excellent entertainment is provided in the dramatic film " Tho Petrified Forest," the main attraction on the programme to be presented at tho Crystal Palace and Rialto Theatres to-night. TUDOR CINEMA Miriam Hopkins, Merle Oberon and Joel McCrea have the leading roles in "These Three, 1 ' the dramatic film which heads tho current programme at tho Tudor Cinema. VICTORIA THEATRE Guest night will bo observed at the Victoria Theatre to-night, whfin tho films " Paris Interlude " and " Murder in-a Private Car " will be shown. CAPITOL THEATRE " Rose of the Rancho " and " Whipsaw " comprise the programme at the Capitol Theatre to-night.
