Grace McElwyn 24 Francis Lincoln 12 Pegaway ... 21 TOTALISATOR TAX EFFECT ON SMALL CLUBS MINISTER ASKED FOR RELIEF [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WAIROA, Monday The opinion that the tax at present imposed on the smaller racing clubs in Now Zealand was grossly unfair and that it was killing them was expressed at the annual meeting of the Wairoa Pacing Club. It was decided to write to the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, asking that the smaller clubs should bo given some relief, and suggesting that the position might ho met by tho adoption of a system that in cases where £IO,OOO or less is put through tho totalisator the first £SOOO should be free of taxation.

MATAMATA RACING CLUB

FINANCES STRENGTHENED [by telegraph OWN correspondent] MATAMATA, Monday The following officers wero elected at the annual meeting of the Matamata Racing Club: —Patron, Mr. H. F. Moncur, M.P.; president, J. Corbett; vice-presidents, Messrs. G. Johnston, J. Tims, C. J. Casey; guarantors' committee, Messrs. J. W. Anderson, J. Corbett, G. Johnston, J. Tims, C. J. Casey, J. Price, G. G. Bell, J. Clothier, F. Rose, D. Casey; junior members' committee, Messrs. E. Johnston, C. G. Payzo, J. Landells, A. E. Davis, A. Stewart, H. Keeley; secretarv, Mr. B. C. Taylor; auditor, Mr. L. H. Little. The annual report stated that the club was in an exceptionally strong position. There was a profit of £944 on the annu.nl totalisator meeting and a profit of £253 in the farm trading account. After deducting £366 depreciation there was a not profit of £415 on the year's working. The bal-ance-sheet showed assets at £5433. The secretary reported that there was a possibility that the Matamata Club would get an extra day allotted. RICH HACK PRIZES KEEN COMPETITION LIKELY

There is likely to be keen bidding among tho racing clubs in future for the honour of staging tho most valuable race for horses of hack class, and tho Canterbury Jockey Club has made tho first move this season by attaching a stake of £4OO to the Otaio to be run on the third day of the New Zealand Metropolitan meeting in November. Last season the most valuable stake for horses not yet in the open class was given by the Riverton Racing Club, which added £350 to a £3 sweepstake for the Southern Champion Hack Cup. In the North Island there were two hack events worth £3OO, these being the Champion Hack Cup at Te Aroha and the Champion Plato at Avondale. The Douro Cup and Otaio Plate were each worth £250.
