INSTITUTE'S FIFTH YEAR REVIEW OF PROGRESS Reviewing the progress of the New Zealand Institute of Secretaries at its fifth annual conference, held at Dunedin last week, the retiring president, Mr. E. A. Wallace, of Wellington, said it had sprung from a desire of secretaries to establish within their own country » body which would promote and safeguard their professional status and general interests. Since founded in Auckland in 1931, the institute had extended to Wellington, Canterbury, Otago and Southland, with a present membership of 670. The institute's medal for the year was reported to have been awarded to Mr. L. H. Watson, of Auckland, who gained 82 and 80 per cent markings in respective papers of the final secretarial subjects. This was the second occasion on which an Auckland student has won the medal. In consequence of having passed the institute's examinations, the following new members were admitted:—Messrs. H. B. Mitchell, L. H. Watson, A. P. S. Bell (Auckland), D. Laurenson, J. H. Pope, H. M. Boulton (Wellington), and W. L. Watson (Christchurch). Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr. W. M. Barton (Auckland); executive vice-president, Mr. J. Annand-Smith (Wellington); vicepresidents, Sir James Parr, Sir George Richardson, Sir Walter Stringer, Messrs. C. V. Mark, H. A. Somerville and the Hon. G. J. Garland (Auckland) ; executive council, Messrs. D. G. Commons, J. A. Sherriff (Auckland), E. A. Wallace" (Wellington), G. N. Boulton (Wangnnui), A. E. G. Lyttle (Christchurch), W. H. Amos (Ashburton), A. G. Valentine, M. J. Broadman (Dunedin), E. Abbov-Jones and H. C. Gimblett (Invercargill); registrar, Mr. C. P. Earle (Auckland). Among those present at the anniversary dinner following the conference were the Mayor of Dunedin, the Pev. E. T. Cox, the chancellor of the University of Otago, Mr. W. J. Morrell, the principal of the Dunedin Technical College, Mr. W. G. Aldridge, the sccretarv of the Otago High Schools' Board, Mr' C. R. McLean, " and Mr. J. M. Paterson.
