LAND SETTLEMENT
WAIKATO SCHEME PRAISED ENGLISH JOURNALIST'S VISIT [from oub own corkkspoxdkxt] HAMILTON, Monday An inspection of the Waikato Land Settlement Society's properties at Kairingi and Kerakiriki was made during the week-end by Sir. J. Morgan, agricultural editor of the Daily Herald, London. He said he was much impressed hv this method of assisting men on the land, so that they gained expert knowledge, together with practical experience. The farms themselves were one of the most astonishing demonstrations he had seen of the breaking-in of new country from almost primal conditions to productive utilisation in a little over two j'ears. In an interview Mr. Morgan said he was visiting New Zealand primarily for the purpose of obtaining first-hand knowledge of marketing conditions in the Dominion. His mission was to present the case for the New Zealand farmer to the British public, and the New Zealand Government was supporting the proposal in every way. In briefly commenting on the guaranteed price scheme, Mr. Morgan stated that there was not the slightest doubt that farmers' organisations in England were critical both of the effect of tho exchange and standard price policy. A weakness of the standard price system was that for its perfect working, complementary machinery on the other side was necessary, and this did not exist to quite the same extent as in the Dominion. This meant that in all probability New Zealand would have to accept the best elements available in the ordinary trading position overseas for some time to come, though in this connection New Zealand farmers would have to take full ac- | fount of the English Milk Marketing | Board and the marketing board proposed by the National Association of Creamery Proprietors.
