WORK FOR EX-SOLDIERS
RAILWAY DUPLICATION EMERGENCY LANDING FIELD [by TELEGRAPH —TRESS association] WELLINGTON, Saturday Advice has boen -received by the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association from the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, that arrangements have been mado for the Railway Department to engage about 100 physically fit men from the returned soldiers' camp at Paraparaumu, to be employed on earthworks for the duplication of the main trunk lino between Plimmerton and Pukerua. The Minister also advises that an engineering survey is being mado by his department to determine, the area of land required for emergency landing grounds at Paraparaumu, and lie expects to placo 50 men from the camps on the work of levelling the area selected. This work would be suitable for men who were not absolutely physically lit. The work will be done on co-operative contracts based on standard rates of wages. The Minister's announcement is the result of representations made by the Returned Soldiers' Association. The Minister stated at that time that an emergercy landing ground near Wellington was essential to the air services in operation.
