EPSOM ACTIVITY

WORK ON CINDERS CHARTERIS HAY PLEASES YOUNG "HORSES SHOW PROMISE BY AIIAYDOS After a few days' respite, training was resumed at Epsom on Saturday morning. Conditions were uufavour-, able, and although, the cinder track was in good order, there was no attempt to make fast times. Charteris Bay (A. Cole) went away ten seconds behind Goldon Maid (J. Mahoney), the hiilf-brother to Bedford (J. Herring), Frank Worthy— Great Quest filly \D. Smith), Surprise Journey—Manna colt (R. Saunders, jun.) and Peter Bingen—lieta Huon filly (C. G. Lee), on a mile and aquarter run, and finishing very easily alongside Herring and Smith's charges, he registered 3.15, the last half in 1.16. Charteris Bay, who was keen to go faster, looks improved by his recent racing. Bedford's relative and the Great Quest filly, finished together in 3.25, running the final section in 1.17. The latter worked unhoppled. The Peter Bingen filly trotted evenly, holding her position for a mile, and when the pacers drew away in the straight, she was not pressed. The Surprise Journey colt, a half-brother to Manna's Son, paced pleasingly for seven furlongs and was pulled up. Golden Maid, sister to Kuini, broke after completing a circuit. Task for Silver Watch Silver Watch (L. J. Mahoney) was given his first try-out in hopples since being recommissioned, and he was not extended on a two miles journey. He : was accompanied part of the way by Cherrill (J. Mahoney), who was freelegged. Cherrill, who has been spelling since her June success, has put on a good deal of surplus flesh. Brown Betty (G. Cole) accompanied by the Great Parrish—Manna filly (R. Saunders, jun.) worked a mile in 2.34. Gold Pointer (W. C. Willetts) ran a mile and a-quarter at a 2.30 gait. He appeared sore when jogging, but paced usefully when warmed up. The half-brother to Young Rodney is afflicted with corns. Dick Redmond (A. Brown) gave a sound display of trotting over two circuits, and .Frank Redmond was allotted a similar task. Manna's Son Returns Manna's Son (L. Laver) trotted an easy two miles.. He went sore before the August meeting, and is now an inmate of Laver's stable. Great Sonoma (C. M. Morrison) was exercised in saddle. He is in good order to begin work for the Waikato meeting, where the slow two miles event will suit him.

Indiana (L. McMahori) marred what promised to be a very useful mile and a-quarter effort, by breaking badly just before reaching; the mile. She ran the distance in 3.0, the last quarter in 375. This daughter of Jewel Pointer is a fine type of three-year-old. who only requires to develop solidness to be useful. Kewpie's King (C. H. Goodall) compassed a mile and a-lialf. He will take time to reach racing trim. Arabond CD. 0. Jones) trotted solidly for a couple of laps, while DLI- - who was left in Jones' charge after the August meeting, was restricted to easy work. Auto Machine (A. Brown) was given an unhoppled task on the sand. After | a two months' spell he appears . to have come in sound.

Friday night. > The president, Mr. R.Hedley, in his annual report, referred to the fact that the club at the beginning of the year had come tp the end of its resources and it was decided that the running of a meeting at Opotiki would be a doubtful proposition. Tlsi Racing Conference gave the club permission to race in June, and the Bay of . Plenty Club granted the use of its course at Tauranga. The meeting was held on the King's Birthday and proved a great success. The profit from the race meeting amounted to over £1163, exceeding all expectations. In reply to a question, Mr. Short stated that in the event of an aerodrome being established on the course there was a prospect that the course would be partly altered. If established, the aerodrome would be' the terminus from Auckland for some time, Tauranga being the other main stopping place. The estimated cost of the aerodrome was £9OOO, and it was expected that the department's intentions would be known in the course of the next few days.
