KII/IBERLEY GOLDFIELDS f DISAPPOINTED MINERS After the initial " boom," half a century ago, the Kimberley goldfields proved disappointing to many miners. An item in the New Zkaland Herald of September 7, 1886. stated: — "The steamer Tagliaferro, which arrived at tlie Melbourne wharf on the 24th from Western Australia, brought back for the southern colonies and New Zealand from 40 to 50 gold diggers who have b<>en disappointed in the expectations which they had formed with reference to the payable nature of the Kimberlev goldfield in Western Australia. They all gave most discouraging accounts of the diggings. Some are from Wyndhain, where they had proceeded with the intention of going on to Kimberley. They were deterred from visiting the goldfields, however, in consequnc<3 of meeting large numbers or diggerfi at Wyndhain who had come back unsuccessful."
