ORPHAN CLUB RALLY
VISITORS ENTERTAINED The history of the Orphans' Clubs in Auckland was recalled by the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. Ernest Davis, a foundation member of the club, in addressing the rally of the combined Orphans' Clubs of the Auckland Province at the Town Hall on Saturday night. About 1250 members and their friends were present."' The visitors were welcomed by the president of the Auckland Club, Mr. C. M. Croft. A brief address on the objects of Orphandom was given by Professor Maxwell Walker. The rally was attended by members of 17 clubs in the Auckland Province. Among the guests were the Rt. Hon. R. B. Bennett, a former Prime Minister of Canada, the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, Colonel J. E. Duigan, A.D.C., Squadron-Leader L. M. Isitt, members of the City Council, Mr. J. S. Brigham, town clerk, Mr. J. Tyler, city'engineer, and other members of the City Council staff. The programme included items by the club orchestra, under Mr. Harold Baxter, and songs by Messrs. Frank Sutherland, Ernest Snell. Len Barnes, Gordon Fagan, Robert Simmers and the Lyric Four. Humorous items were given by Messrs. Alan McElwain and Rex Yates, a cornet solo by Mr. Alan Moreton, violin solos by Mr. Vincent Aspey, an organ solo by Mr. Trevor Sparling, a recitation by Professor Walker, a character sketch by Mr. Alan McSkimming, rag pictures by Mr. R. Harris, magic by Kardo, and a physical culture display by Mr. Len Wilson and his troupe. The accompanists were Messrs. L. Elliott, Sparling and H. Worsley.
