INSTITUTE AFFAIRS
Aranga.—Members held a bazaar recently to raise funds for their institute. A short play by some of the members was much enjoyed. The competition was for tinfoil pictures. Knawai. —'The roll call, "Sing, Sav or Pay," caused great amusement. The competitions were for making cocoanut icp, nut toffee, the best knitted article and a soft toy. These were all keenly contested.
Paeroa.—The celebration of the sixth birthday of the Paeroa institute proved a very successful function. The president, Mrs. R. J. Roberts, welcomed the guests. An enjoyable programme was presented, items being rendered by Mr. and Mrs. Broadley, Mrs. Roberts, Mrs. Wemyss, Miss El_va Wemyss, Mr. W. Forrest and the institute musical circle, Mrs. Turton acting as soloist. An amusing one-act play, "Between the Soup and the Savoury," enacted by Mesdames Oatton, Duffy and Elliott, was much appreciated. Congratulations and good wishes were offered by representatives of five visiting institutes. After supper, dancing proved a popular ending to a very enjoyable evening. Te Kopuri.—The institute at its meeting made arrangements to hold a poster and fancy dress ball in aid of institute funds. A competition for a beautifully decorated fruit cake was won by Mrs. Hackett. while a thrift competition, for a petticoat not to cost more than ss, was won by Mrs. Leabourn.
Tangowahine.—A thrift competition for a soft toy was well contested. Members were thanked for their help in connection with the recent annual dance.
Waihue. —The competition for a soft toy was well contested, the members afterwards giving the toys in to be sent to the Makogai Leper Island children. During the afternoon Mr. Heerdegen, of Dargaville, gave a very instructive demonstration on tree pruning.
