ELLERSLIE TRACK

SOME USEFUL WORK REREATU'S SIX FURLONGS BOWYANG SPRINTS NICELY The No. 3 grass, with the poles 10ft. out, was available for galloping at Ellerslie yesterday, when a fair amount of fast work was accomplished. The going was heavy. The sand track was also freely used. Spaed fast (Coon) finished in front of Salvor at the end of five furlongs in 1.11 1-5. Speedfast appears to have benefited by his recent course of schooling. Fleetwind (Gilchrist) ran half a ; mile in 56 l-5s and Teddy Boy (McTavish) covered six furlongs in 1.26 4-5. Teddy Boy is in great heart and should be seen to advantage at the spring meetings.

Mazir (Wiggins) strode easily over a round, running the last six furlongs in J.'27 3-5. Ho hit out very freely in the solt going. Mazir is to remain at Ellcrslio until after the Avondale meeting.

Master Brierly (Green) completed an easy round with three furlongs in 4.'? 2-ss. He is thriving on the work allotted him.

Knight of Australia (Coon) and Horowhenua (Kearns) were not extended while traversing a round in 2.1 1-5.

Hall-Mile by Kelly

Kelly (Gilchrist) was responsible for a smart half-mile in 53 3-ss. He may have his first race of the season on the second day of the Avondale meeting. After running the first three furlongs in 38s, Rereatu (Gilchrist) completed six in J.lB 2-5. He was lightly weighted, but again galloped attractively. . Backblock (Kearns) and Horotiu (light boy) strode , over a round in 1.59 3-5, and Solas (Cameron) ran six furlongs in 1.29 2-5. Royal Appellant (Buchanan) and Tybalt (McCurdy) were together at the ond of a round in 1.55, the last six furlongs occupying 1.28. Both should race prominently at the spring meetings. Landlubber (Wiggins), after running the first two in 27 2-ss, completed five furlongs in 1.10 and Tooley Street (Kearns) sprinted half a mile in 57 2-ss. Valmint (Murray) was allotted an easy six furlongs and was not after time. He should be ready to raco at short notice.

United (Gilmer) covered six furlongs in 1.25 1-5. Bon Star completed his task with a sprint down the straight. Hope Lass (Sargent) ran half a mile in 57 l-ss. Ruling King (Craddock) six furlongs in 1.28 1-5,

Harlech Shows Speed Arabesque , (Fergus) and Vilma (Baker) were together at the end of half a mile in 555, a fair effort for hunters. •

Silver Sound (Goldfinch) sprinted half a mile in 57 3-ss. Marjory Daw (Tremain) completed her work with three furlongs in 43 2-ss. On the two-year-old track Bowyang (Goldfinch) sprinted two furlongs in 25 -3-ss. He galloped attractively and appears an excellent prospect for the Avondale Stakes.

Bowyang's stable companion Harlech (Murray) also displayed speed when sent over a furlong twice, registering 12 3-5s the first time and 12 l-5s the next.

On the sand Versant (Holland) was allotted strong work, hitting out in good style over the last six furlongs. Roman Mascot (Tremain) covered a mile and a-quarter at a good pace. *'

For the St. Leger Stakes, to be run next Wednesday at the Doncaster meeting, there were 294 entries, and 177 survived the first forfeit. The field has now been reduced to 17, which is rather more than the average number of starters in recent years. It has cost owners £IOO for each horso to bo eligible to start. The winner's share of tho purse will bo something over £IO,OOO. • # The Doncaster St. Leger is tho oldest of the English great classics, for tho race that was to become tho St. Leger was first urn on Cantley Common in 1776, while the Derby was not inaugurated until four years later. In 1778 the event received the title of the St. Leger Stakes at a gathering of sportsmen at tho famous Red Lion Inn at Doncaster, when the Marquis of Rockingham proposed that Colonel St. Leger should bo so honoured. Although the Derby is the more important, the value of a St. Leger victory can hardly be over-estimated, for it is enly a true stayer who can win it. ' . , x u Many very sensational incidents nave occurred in the history of the St. Leger, and apparently there will be general surprise in England if Rhodes Scholar is beaten. In tho last 10 years no fewer than five of tho Derby winners have been successful in the September rare—Coronach, Trigo, Hyperion, Windsor Lad and Bahram.
