TRADE OF THE WEEK

RETAIL AND WHOLESALE GOOD BUSINESS CONTINUES ADVANCE IN TEA VALUES Gratification with the manner in which the ~ improved tone of buying is being maintained is expressed by wholesale merchants in Auckland. The .demand covers a wide range, being particularly noticeable in such lines as dried fruits, sultanas, canned fruit and tinned fish. There have been few price alterations during the week. Business in the retail trade continues steady, and several houses are showing the new spring lines. Conditions in the indent business are quiet as merchants have already bought I most of their requirements for Christmas. SANDSOAP Friers for one line of sandsoap have been advanced by Is a dozen. TOBACCO A new line or tobacco imported from South Africa, packed in lib tins, has been introduced to the retail tirade. TAPIOCA There is a fairly severe shortage of tapioca on the spot, but the position will be eased by the arrival of the Narbada,.which is expected to-morrow. DRIED APRICOTS London shippers of South African dried apricots have advised that stocks of this year's crop are practically exhausted, and prices are beginning to advance. TINNED FISII The exceptionally good demand for all kinds of tinned fish is being maintained, salmon and sardines meeting with a very steady sale. This inquiry does not generally set in until nearer the Christmas holidays. WOOLPACKS VVoolpacks are in demand and a large trade has been done, according to advice received from Calcutta. The Narbada, which is I due to arrive from the East at the weeki end, is carrying '258 bales for discharge at | Auckland. THE MARKET BASKET FRUIT PRICES RISE •WHITEBAIT FAIRLY SCARCE Several lines of fruit sold at higher retail prices during the week owing to short supplies. Hothouse tomatoes were particularly scarce and they are at present selling at prices ranging from 2s 6d to .'is per lb. Island oranges also were in short supply, while bananas, which yesterday brought up to 29s 6d a case for medium grades 011 the wholesale market, are selling at 5d and 6d per lb. They will remain fairly dear during the next week, but an easing in price should follow the sale of the large shipment which is due to arrive by the Matua on Wednesday. All varieties of apples arc firming with the exception of local Delicious which are now practically finished.

Vegetables remain plentiful and there has been little alteration in last week's rates except that cauliflowers are slightly dearer. All grades of pumpkins are selling at 3d per lb, and a few Island cucumbers are available at prices ranging from 6d to 8d each. Values for fish remain unchanged, although whitebait has been fairly scarce owing to the recent bad weather. Once conditions are more settled, however, it is expected that the fish will begin to run and ample quantities should be available after September 20.
