DEFENCE NEEDS
Sir, —I think it would be a very good thing if a commission of experienced men in defence matters should inquire as to what ways the public funds should be expended, and state what works were most urgently needed. When one thinks of the lengthy coastline, and the ease with which an invading force could establish itself,' it seems wrong that the New Zealand people should be left in danger. To my mind the coasts, from Coromandel to Napier and from Port Waikato to the Mokau, are at present lying open to attack, and I think that the defence authorities would prefer to see serviceable roads made via Onewhero, Raglan and Kawhia to Taranaki, and another via Howick, Miranda and Coromandel to Waihi, rather than have larger sums squandered on tourist roads through the uninhabitable mountains of Westland and Otago. Pro Patria.
