FAILURE TO STOP
NEGLIGENT MOTORIST FINES AMOUNT TO £l4 Charges of negligent driving, faiiing to stop after being involved in an accident, and failing to report an accident, were admitted b.v George Alfred Carl Whitehead, a hotel porter, of Rotorua, before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.. 'yesterday, in the Police Court at Otahuhu. Sergeant J. Cnhill said that a stockman, Kenneth Williams, cycling on the Great South Road to his work at Westfield about 9 p.m. on .July .'3l was knocked down by a motor-car. About two hours later he was found by workmen at an adjoining works wandering about in a dazed condition, suffering from head injuries necessitating his admission to hospital. Williams' cycle was found on the roadway and the headlamp of a car close by. The police traced the car, which had been driven ! by defendant. In his statement, continued the sergeant, defendant said he left Rotorua with three passengers in a hired car. He bad just passed another car near Otahuhu, the lights of which dazzled him, when he felt a bump, lie did not see any cyclist. After proceeding aliout half a mile he stopped on discovering one headlamp was missing. Ho returned to the scene, but could not find it and then drove back to Rotorua without continuing to Auckland. Defendant he knew he had hit something as his bumper was bent, his hood dented and the side of tho car scratched. Sergeant Cabill said that defendant had not advised tho police, who had approached him. "Yon are fortunate von are not charged under the new regulations which came into force the next flav." snid the magistrate, in warning defendant that he would have been liable to a fine up to £SOO. Defendant was fined £lO nnd 10s costs on the charge of failing to stop, £2 and 10s costs on each of the two other charges. His licence was cancelled and lie was disqualified from holding one for 12 months.
