The weekly T quotations are based on actual sales of wholesale quantities of carcases of mutton or lamb or of quarters of beef delivered to Smithfield market and/or Jjondon stores. Tliev aro compiled by the Quotations Committee, Smithfield. To arrive at the equivalent ex ship values one farthing per pound should be deducted from the prices quoted above. Quotations given represent the average for tho week, and are not selected lines, but for parcels fairly representative of the bulk of shipments now on offer. CHILLED BEEF IN DEMAND GOOD LAMB CONSUMPTION The following private cablegrams dealing with the Smithfield meat market at the close of last week have been received:— New Zealand Meat Producers' Board. —Lambs: The market is firmer, with prices generally better. Consumption continues satisfactorj'. Mutton: Wethers nre steady, with improved prices for heavy-weights. Ewes are quiet, and prices unchanged. Beef: Frozen beef is unchanged. For chilled beef tho demand is good at slightly lower prices than last week. New Zealand porkers: The market is firm, with good trade. New Zealand baconcrs: The market is firmer, owing to short spot stocks. Bank of New Zealand. —Wethers: The market is steady. Ewes: There is only a poor demand. Lambs: The market is inclined to become firmer. Quotations: Wethers, light, 4Jd to s}d per lb.; heavy, 3Jd to 4J(1; ewes, 3id to 4.1(1; lambs, twos, 6|d to 7£d; eights, 6:{d to GJ-d; fours, 6id to 6Jd; seconds, Ojjd to 6gd. THE LAMB TRADE FUTURE POSITION STEADY FAIRLY LIGHT SHIPMENTS (Received August 10, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, August 15 Wet, cool weather has not favoured the lamb trade. Prices, however, aro fairly steady and should remain so. Stocks at July 31 and shipments afloat in August aro well within tho consumptive capacity. Australian beef shared in the recent increase in price, but heavy marketing of Brazilian prevented Australian receiving a full share of the rise. Now that Brazilian arrivals aro casing Australian should bo m a more favourable position.

Captain A. W. Pearse, Australian representative on tho Port of London Authority, stated that heavy port dues are seriously affecting the New Zealand and Australian meat trade. An Argentine ship pays only one set of port dues whereas an Australian vessel is faced by seven sets and sometimes 15 if it proceeded to New Zealand. However, it is not likely that Australian chilled will ever compete with Argentine as the quantities available aro little more than samples. Silver was quoted yesterday at 19Jd an ounce spot and forward, compared with 19 9-lGd both positions on Thursday.
