CENTENNIAL PLANS

ORGANISATION WOBK ZONING OF PROVINCE MAYORS AND CHAIRMEN MEET Considerable! progress toward tin? formation of district committees ior the Auckland Provincial Centennial Organisation is expected to result from an informal conference of Mayors and chairmen of provincial local bodies, hold this week by the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. Krnest Davis. lit a statement last night Mr. Davis said that questions connected with the organisation of the centennial in the province) were iniormally discussed at length, particular reference being made to the steps to be taken to ensure a sound and uniform preliminary campaign for the definition of the areas in which district committees should bo constituted. Jt. was agreed that the determining factor should be community of interest, and that, as a means of facilitating the work of the selection committee, the area should be zoned.

Jt,' was suggested that the North Auckland zone should comprise Otaniatea, Whangarei, Ilobson, Bay of Islands, Hokianga and Mangonui counties; the Central Auckland zone, Waitemata and Manukau counties; South Auckland zone, Raglan, Waipa, Waikato and l'iako counties; and Waihi zone, Ohincmuri, Thames and Coromandel counties. Other zones proposed were Rotorua and T'auranga, the* latter covering Tauranga and Bay of Plenty.

It was agreed tliafc tlie Mayors of Whangaroi and Dargavillo and tho cliairmnn of the Mangonui County Council would collaborate to call a meeting of the different county interests iit the North Auckland 7.0110, that tho Mayor of Hamilton would act similarly with respect to tho South Auckland zone, and tho Mayor of Waihi with respect to the Waihi zone. It was further agreed to send a letter to tho Mayor of Kotorua asking him to undertake the work in his district, and to the Mayor of Tauranga asking him to operate for the Hay of Plenty. Thursday, October 22, was fixed as the date for the first meeting of the selection committee.

Mr. Davis explained that the proposal was to confine consideration at the meetings, which would he held as indicated, to the tentative division of the area into sections in which committees could appropriately be formed, and not to deal with details of celebration, which of course, would receive the closest analysis and attention after the committees had been formed. The recommendations made by these meetings would in due courso be submitted to the selection committee for its guidance in making a final determination of tho district committees.
