CONTRACTORS AND WAGES COUNCIL DECLINES REQUEST [bt telegraph OWN correspondent] WHANG AREI, Friday "We are looked upon as a legitimate means of passing on to the ratepayers the extra costs of recent legislation, but 1 do not think that is equitable, and we tihould be very careful in these matters," said the chairman, Mr. J. A. S. Mackay, at a meeting of the Whangarei County Council to-day, when referring to an application from a contractor that his contract price for delivering metal on the MoewhareWaiotira Road be increased. The applicant said ho had tendered on a basis of 1b 6d an hour for wages, but legislation had increased this to 2s an hour. The clerk ; Mr. H. C. Hemphill, said the contract was let on May 8, and the new scale of wages came into force on July 1. Mr. A. Stephen, member for the riding, said he was not prepared to recommend an increase in the contract price. On his motion the application was refused.
