COLLIERY DISASTER

OPENING OF INQUEST MORE BODIES RECOVERED British Wireless RUGBY, August 7 An inquest was opened to-day at Baruslev on the victims of the disaster at Wharncliffe Woodmoor colliery. Evidence of identification was given in several cases by wives who had lost, their husbands, or mothers who had lost only sons. A relief fund has been opened by the Mayor of Barnsley. Efforts to recover the remaining bodies are being continued. Twenty more were brought to the surface today. Rescue parties, for which there is no lack of volunteers, are risking asphyxiation suddenly iand without warning by carbon monoxide gas. The veteran president of the Miners' Federation, Mr. Herbert Smith, went down the pit to-day immediately on his arrival. He and two other miners' officials had flown from Prague, where they had been attending a miners' international conference. The King sent a message expressing his great distress at the accident and conveying his deep sympathy with the bereaved relatives.
