FROZEN AND CHILLED PRICES AT SMITHFI ELD MOST VALUES STEADY (Received August 0, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, August 8 Following arc the latest quotations for frozen and chilled meat, with those of the previous wek for comparison:

The weekly <jnotntions iu'c based on actual sales of wholesale quantities of eareases of mutton or lamb or of quarters of beef delivered to Smithfielil market and/or London stores. They are compiled by the Quotations Committee, Sniithlield. To arrive at the equivalent ex ship values one farthing per pound should be dedueted from the prices quoted above. Quotations given represent the average for the week, and are not selected lines, but for parcels fairly representative of the bulk of shipments now oil oli'er.

LAMB MARKET STEADY CHILLED BEEF IMPROVES The following private cablegrams dealing with the Smithfield meat market at the close of last week have been received: — Bank of New Zealand. —Wethers: Demand and prices are steady. Ewes: The market is rather easier. Lambs: The market is weaker for light-weights; heavy-weights remain steady. Quotations: Wethers, light, 4id to s.'d per lb.; heavy, 3jd to 4id; ewes, 3{d to 4.', d; lambs, twos, 6£d to 7d; eights, 6Jd to GJd; fours, Gid to 6gd; seconds, 6Jd to 6i]d. New Zealand Meat Producers' Board. —Lambs: The market is steady, with prices practically unchanged. Consumption is overtaking arrivals. Mutton: The market for wethers and ewes is steady and unchanged, with fair trade. Beef: The market for frozen beef is unchanged. Chilled beef prices are better owing to cooler weather. New Zealand porker pigs: Firmer, with more demand. New Zealand baconer pigs: Firm, with spot stocks short.

HARDWARE TRADE BENEFITS EXPECTED Speaking at tho annual meeting in Christchurch last week of E. Recce, Limited, hardware merchants, Mr. A. P. A. Nieholls, chairman of directors, said that tho hardware trade expected to benefit considerably from the plans of the Government for extensive building, and it was hoped that payment of higher wages would be offset by the fillip given to business by increased activity. The chairman took an optimistic view of the future.
