NATIONAL WEEK

SATURDAY'S OPENING TROTTING AT ADDINGTON DE SOTO AND GRAND MOGUL PONTY WINTER CUP FANCY National week in Christchurch will open with the first day of the Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting nt Arlington on Saturday, after which will follow the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club s Grand National Sleeting at Riccarton 011 Tuesday. The Trotting Club will race again on Wednesday and Friday and the Jockey Club on Thursday and Saturday. Final payments for the Grand National Steeplechase, the Grand National Hurdles and the Winter Cup, together with acceptances for the minor handicap events on the first day at Riccaron, are due this evening, and interest in the racing is sure to quicken when these appear. It is unlikely that there will be many defections from the Grand Nationals, although latest reports indicate that Dunmure and Battleground may go out of the steeplechase. Battleground has run some of his best races over country, but he is a hardy customer, who might not bo out of placo in the Grand National Hurdles. Many good horses will be competing at Addington and Riccarton, and some who may play their part well are Be Soto, who displayed his worth when he won two races at Epsom in June, Grand Mogul, Ponty, Diamond, Manawatu, Clarion Call and Val Watch. Ponty made a deep impression when he won on the final day at Trentham last month, and a repetition of the eood form he revealed there should make him very difficult to beat in the Winter Cup. Mother Superior was scratched for all engagements at the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting at 9 a.m. yesterday.

FIDELITY'S RECOVERY FILLY MAY RACE AGAIN The champion filly Fidelity, who broke a pelvis' bone some months ago, is now being exercised, reports the Sydney Referee. When being exercised she limps slightly, but that disappears when she goes at a stronger pace. She will not return to Sydney for another six weeks, but B. Payten is now optimistic that she will be ready to race in the Adrian Knox Stakes in January.

ORIGIN OF NAME TITLE OF PENNYCOMEQUICK Now that the Hunting Song filly Ponnvcomequick has come into the limelight. curiosity has been evinced as to where she derived her quaint name. It is the same as that of a filly who won the Oaks for Lord Astor in 1929, and no doubt the naming of the New Zealand filly was suggested by that of the Pinglish classic winner. In the latter case, the name was that of a down close to Plymouth, the city Lord Astor represented in the House of Commons before he succeeded to the peerage, and which Lady Astor has since represented.
