AUCKLAND RACING CLUB INCREASE IN STAKE-MONEY A decision to work on the principle of having no stake under £3OO this season was made yesterday by the committee of the Auckland Racing Club. It is proposed to increase the stakes for the season by £1925, and this will be allocated as follows: —Spring meeting, £400; summer, £1025; autumn, £225; and winter, £275. The stake for the Auckland Cup has been fixed at £1750, an increase of £250. Ihe Clifford Plate, weight-for-age, has been raised from £350 to £4OO. Where any open event was worth £3OO tho stake will bo raised to £350. Last season's officials wero reappointed as follows: —Judge, Mr. R. B. Lusk; starter, Mr. R. H. Skipwith; handicapper, Mr. F. J. McManemin; clerk of scales, Mr. H. B. Massey; clerk of course, Mr. W. S. Hirst; recall steward, Mr. P. H. Smith; starter's assistant, Mr. A. Patterson. Four now members were appointed. NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP The VVinton Jockey Club, which last season celebrated its diamond jubilee, began the racing year with a credit of £94 and completed it with £319. King's Head, runner-up to Synagogue in the last' A. J.C. Epsom Handicap, was not entered for that race this season. He lately joined E. F. Walker's team at Clarendon and it is expected he will do well in middledistance handicaps. The South Canterbury Jockey Club made a profit of £623 last season. Apparently, some members believed oven better results could have been achieved under the alternative system of wagering, for it was recommended to tho committee to give win and place betting another trial. Gay Blondo was to have rejoined the regular gallopers at Rand wick last week-end. Although she is not thrown into any of the important spring handicaps, says "Pilot," she may. as n five-year-old, be slightly better than during the season past. If so. she is bound to pay her way in some of tho minor handicaps if not in those of greater importance. Uric of the most successful owners in the Sydney metropolitan area last season was Mr. F. Christoy, who' had his 27th success for the term when Enainonr won the Ascot Handicap. None of his team, most of whom lie bought, won any big prizes, but all did well. Cockpon, Rustler and Leone each won fivo races; Glen Arrow, Enamour, Worthy Hero, Kenya, and Big Head were successful twice, and Codilla once. Latest advices from Melbourne give pride of place in the Caulfield Cup list to Oratory, Cuddle and Donaster, with Egmont, Feldspar and Pamelus on the , second lino. However, as Oratory's trip is now very doubtful, Egmont may be elevated to the first lino, and Cuddle return to the position of first favourite. For the Melbourne Cup, Silver Ring is now equal fancy with Gold Hod. On the second line are Egmont, Donaster, Marabou and Tonga. Ricearton-trained horses collected £43,513 in the past season, winning 249 events and being placed in 421 ( others. J. S. Shaw produced tho win- ; ners of 35 races, compared with T. H. ' Gillett's 18 and H. and A. Cutts' 21. ' Other successful Canterbury trainers were F. Christmas, with winners of 16 races, H. Nurse 15, and D. O'Connor 14.
