BOXING RING

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS AMATEUR TOURNEY NEXT WEEK The annual Auckland provincial amateur boxing championships will be staged at the Town Hall on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings of next week. As usual, every type of boxer will be engaged in a programme which will occupy about ten hours on the three evenings. One of the most enjoyable features of the annual championships is the variety of entertainment offered by widely diversant types of fighters. In addition to the contestant with the knock-out punch there are the one with superlative cleverness, the one who combines punch with skill, the entertaining and eager novice, and again the comparatively untutored but hard-fighting country boxers.

More than 80 entries have been received for the championships, breaking last year's record of over 70. An unusual feature this year is tho number of entries in tho heavier classes, the lighter weights usually being far ahead in number. Another reflection of the progress which boxing has made is that it has been found necessary to include a paper-weight class in order that the boxers being produced in the different schools can be catered for.

In every way it can be said that the tournament promises fine entertainment. On Monday evening the preliminary bouts will be contested, and in tho minds of some enthusiasts this is the best night of the three, because of the variety attached to the appearance of novices and unknown boxers who are looked upon to provide the most humour. Interest also attaches to the contests in wln>h the titleholders and former champions are engaged. Further elimination bouts will be decided on Tuesday evening, together with some semi-linals, while the new champions will be found on the concluding night. The Auckland Boxing Association is well supplied with trophies for the championships, the list being as follows; —Fly-weiglit. Grosvenor Cup; bantam-weight. Hydra Cup; featherweight, Duff Cup; light-weight,' Harry Johns Memorial Belt; welter-weight. W. .1. Rainger Memorial Cup; heavyweight. Yugoslav Cup; most scientific boxer, E. A. Craig Cup; most successful trainer, Kohn Shield.

Besides holding these trophies for the year, the winners and runners-up are presented with gold and silver medals.
