YOUNG CRIPPLES

MEETING OF SOCIETY BRANCHES' WORK REVIEWED THE NUFFIELD TRUST INCOME [BY TELEGRAPH —I'IIESS ASSOCIATION] ,\VEr,LINGTON, Tuesday The annual meeting of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society was held to-day, delegates being present from the districts of the 14 branches. .Mr. Justice Smith, president, was in the chair. The meeting was opened by Viscountess Gal way, who said that in Kngland the Crippled Children Society was an important organisation and did splendid work. A great impetus to the movement in New Zealand had been given by the magnificent gifts of Lord Nuffield and Mr. W. R. Wilson, of Auckland. Air. Justice Smith reviewed the work accomplished in the past year. Ho mentioned various ways in which, particularly, the work of the hospital boards and educational authorities could, be supplemented by the society. Referring to the survey largely carried out in the Dominion in regard to the number of cripples, Mr. Justice Smith said that 1069 cases had been recorded by the various branches. It was of paramount importance, he said, to deal witli incipient cases. The weight of modern authority was that 90 per cent or oven 95 per cent of cripples could be cured if treated in the incipient stage. He referred to the economic administration of the society, which had the great advantage of enabling the money subscribed to reach the cripple. The object of the society was to co-operate with and assist all existing agencies and to supplement their efforts with the object, firstly, of preventing incipient cases from developing, and, secondly, of ensuring that actual cripples would have .the enjoyment of their fujl working life and leisure without pain. Delegates gave an outline of the work done by the various branches. With regard to the Nuffield Trust income delegates were unanimous in the view that representations should be made to the trustees with the object of having refunded to branches the results of the Mayor's appeals in the respective districts. It was stated that in some cases the money was paid into the trust and in others was retained by branches. Unless the anomaly were remedied now it would rankle as a grievance and would crop up from year to year. A resolution to give effect to the view expressed was carried. Mr. C. J. B. Norwood, a member of the trust, said the representations made would receive careful consideration. He stressed the fact that the trust was intended for the benefit of crippled children throughout New Zealand.
