THE DOMAIN STATUE

FURTHER CRITICISM MADE CHRISTIAN CONGREGATIONS Further criticism was levelled at the much-discussed Domain statue at last night's meeting of the Council of Christian Congregations. " It is a disgrace if our youth are to be faced with this thing all their lives," said Mr. T. Caley. " 1 think this council should move in the matter. The longer the statue stays up the harder it will be to have it removed." These remarks were supported by Pastor \V. Campbell. " if Christians do not take action in this matter we will get no further," said Mr. Caley. " It is not art; it is just disgusting." The chairman, the Kev. J. A. Thompson, said if the meeting wished to send forth a motion it was quite in order for it to do so. Mr. E. Smith: The whole matter would have been all right if it had not been for the criticism in the columns of the press. I understand the Grammar School war memorial is surmounted by a nude figure. The Rev. E. D. Patchett: We should leave the statue as it is. After a few moments' silence, the chairman said the next business would have to be proceeded with, as there was no motion before the meeting. Mr. Caley: All right. To test the feeling here, I will move that we try to have the objectionable parts of the statue covered. This was seconded bv Pastor Campbell. A man at the back of the room moved as an amendment that the matter be referred to the executive committee. On this being seconded, it was earned without discussion, the only dissentients being Messrs. Caley and Campbell.
