ELLERSLIE AFFAIRS
SUBSIDISED WORK APPROVED FLOODLIGHTING OF RESERVE The extension of subsidised schemes at Ellerslie was sanctioned by the Department of Labour in a letter received last night by the Ellerslie Town Board. The department said that, subject to the unemployed men being employed at standard rates for a 40-hour week, it approved of the board's scheme for the formation, metalling and tar-sealing, together with the necessary kerbing and channelling in To Marama Avenue, Newhaven Street and Glasgow Road at a total estimated cost of £6OO. A subsidy of £2 os for each man engaged weekly had been authorised. It was decided to proceed with the work. Proposals for the floodlighting of the recreation reserve for night football practice and training were discussed at length. It was understood that the local amateur athletic club and the Rugby League club were prepared to support the scheme.
It was decided that the board be responsible for tho installation and maintenance of one floodlight on condition that tho two clubs mentioned each undertake to meet tho cost of installing and maintaining one light, or alternatively that the clubs each inst.il a light and pay an additional ground fee .of £2 15s annually. It was also agreed to extend the same offer to the Hugbv Union.
A tender of the KUerslie Ex-service-men's Club for a lease of the old fire station as n clubroom was accepted.
