MAORI REPRESENTATIVES WAITANGI SHIELD MATCH AUCKLAND'S DECISIVE VICTORY Tho Maori Rugby League inti*r-pro-vincial match for the Waitangi Shield was played at Carl aw Bark yesterday, when Auckland, holder of tho trophv, defeated Northland by 39 points t° 15. Conditions were ideal and there was a good attendance. The Auckland backs were definitely superior and beat the visitors in open play. L. Brown, who played only in the first half, was easily the best back, while Rata, centre-threequarter, anil Mason, on the wing, played good games. Interest centred in tho appearance of J. ITeini, who lias been resting for several weeks owing to injuries. Ifenii was lame throughout tho gaino and was not seen to advantage, rtroughton, who replaced Brown in the second half, was prominent on the wing. Watcne was easily the best forward on (he ground, and Kawe and Raymond were also prominent. l'oki played a fine game at centre-three-quarter for Northland. Excellent work behind the scrum was performed by S. Pitman, while P. Mackie played consistently on tho wing. Among the forwards, Tauri, T. Pitman and Kepa were conspicuous for good play. Northland attacked from the start and Flesher snapped up in the looso to score oiu minute after tho kick-off. Then Hrown made ground for Auckland after a passing bout, but he passed to Mason, who was pushed intr touch in the dead-hall area. However, Masot scored a minute later. The kick failed. The Auckland backs played good football and from a nice passing bout Rata madi a fine opening and passed to Uiekerton. Tin ball went on to Mason, who just missed i try. and Homi converted. T. Pitman kicked a penally goal for the visitors, and a few minutes later Auckland attacked and Mahima cut in nicely, 110 passed to Rata, who scored and converted. The half-time score was:— Auckland, JO; Northland, 5. Mason was prominent in a good run down the line, tint he passed to Nathan, who was tackled by G. Mackie. Auckland's hacks were e:\sily superior, but they did not attempt to forco the pace. Bickerton scored after a pood passing bout, Hemi's kick missing. Then Mahima scored and Wateno converted. A few minutes later T. Pitman kicked a penally goal for Northland. Toki, win was easily the best of the visitors' backs, scored an excellent try, and T. Pitman converted. Northland commenced to show more initiative and It. Taki scored as & result of a mistake by Jlemi. Pitman failed to convert. It was a short-lived recovery, however, and Raymond scored for Auckland, Hemi converting. Wateno then ran through half the Northland team and Mason completed the movement. Watcne converted.
