WRESTLING ITEMS
CONTEST NEXT SATURDAY Followers of wrestling in Auckland were much interested in the first appearance of Sam Leathers, who opposed "Lofty" Blomfield at the Town Hall on Monday night. The newcomer's specialty is a punishing figure-four head scissors which gets suspiciously close to a strangle hold at times. One wonders how Leathers came to be known as "Sad Sam," as there was certainly nothing sad about him on Monday night. Blomfield's next match will be against Cowboy Russell on Saturday night, and there is every indication that it will be a particularly lively contest. Russell is determined to show the public his real ability, and it is certain he will meet a willing opponent. The amateur preliminaries at the Town Hall this season have demonstrated what great progress the participants in the sport nave made. Several of the bouts have boen just as entertaining as the professional matches, although in some instances there has been rather much showing off. There is one feature which could bo deleted from amateur contests, and that is elbow jolting. This method of attack is all right for professional bouts where all-in methods are more or less adopted, but it could well bo discarded by the amateurs.
