PROPOSED PACIFIC CABLE The question of a cable across tbo Facilio was engaging attention 50 year# ago. The following telegram from London, which appeared in the Zkai.and Hkrald on July 14, locO' details the position: — "Secrecy is observed as to the.resu of a meeting between the Upper Canadian Commissioner and the Agen - General of all the Australian colonies except Now South Wales, but it understood that nothing was decided regard to the proposal for a telegrap cable across the Pacific. It was plained that £2,500.000 would be* quired to lay a cable between Van eouver Island and New Zealand . Queensland, and that a s'lbsidv,^ 1 £67.000 would be required from land and the colonies. It was belie probable that England would contriDU a third of the subsidy."
