KING'S CUP EVENT • CHARLES GARDNER WINS CAPTAIN PERCIVAL FOURTH FAST SPEED ATTAINED By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received July 12, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 11 The final stage of the King's Cup air race was flown to-day in a gusty wind and showery conditions. The course was 12 circuits of 26 miles. The winner was Mr. Charles Gardner, flying Captain Sir Connop Guthrie's Percival Vega-Gull. He had received a start of 25m. 335. He averaged 164.5 miles an hour. Flight-Lieutenant Thomas Rose, flying the Countess of Wakefield's MilesHawk with a start of 11m. 255, and an average of 184.5 miles an hour, was second. Flight-Lieutenant J. B. Wilson, in Lord Willoughby de Broke's Double Eagle, with a start of 12m. 305., and an average of 181.1 miles an hour, was third. Captain E. W. Percival, scratch, in the Duke of Kent's Mew Gull, averaged miles an hour and was fourth, in spite of the fact that he flew the last lap at 211 miles an hour, equalling his last year's record. Mr. C. W. A. Scott, flying his own Miles Falcon, received 15m. 555. start, and was thirteenth. He averaged 165.5 miles an hour. In the first stage of the event yesterday Captain Percival was first to complete' the first lap of the eliminating contest. Mrs. J. A. Mollison was among the last to reach Hatfield, haying lost valuable time through mistaking the finishing line in the Bristol section. There were several minor crashes and mishaps, causing withdrawals. Captain Percival was still leading at Norwich in the second lap and was the first to complete the circuit over a course of 1224 miles, occupying 7 hours 7 minutes.
The King's Cup air race was held last year on September 7 over a course of 356 miles, and was won by FlightLieutenant T. Rose, flying the Viscountess Wakefield's Miles Falcon machine. The next five pilots to finish were: Flying-Officer H. R. A. Edwards (Miles Hawk), Flight-Lieutenant 0. Cathcart Jones (Miles Hawk), Captain H. S. Broad (T.K.2), Mr. L. Lipton (Miles Falcon), and Mr. E. W. Percival (Percival Mew Gull).*
