BREAK IN WATER MAIN
DIFFICULT REPAIR WORK DOMESTIC SUPPLY CUT OFF ABOUT 100 HOUSES AFFECTED Houses in parts of Surrey Crescent, Richmond Avenue, Gilbert Avenue and Sefton Avenue were without water for the greater part of yesterday, and residents had to carry water for domestic supply from neighbouring houses, as a result of a break in the main in Surrey Crescent. City Council water- works officials were notified of the break at seven o'clock in the morning, when it was found that the water had lifted several square feet of roadway and was flow-. ing up through cracks in the bitumen. The break was found to be in the 6in. pipe directly under the outward tram lines, and the replacement proved a difficult task, as the tram lines had to be kept clear. The pipe was replaced by nine o'clock last night, and the water was turned on again. During the day residents obtained water for cooking and other purposes in buckets from houses supplied from other mains. About 100 houses in all were affected.
