"Higher wages on public works are taking men away from gumdigging, and in anticipation of a scarcity, merchants are buying forward. This is not confined to local dealing, for overseas buyers are realising the position and placing orders. Values for the lower grades have risen by £4 to £5 a ton, while better sorts ara worth up to £25 more.
