MATCHES ON SATURDAY PONSONBY BEATS CAMBRIDGE SOME REPRESENTATIVE GAMES Rugby football competitions were continued in country centres of the Auckland Province on Saturday afternoon. The Ponsonby senior team from Auckland visited Cambridge, where it defeated the home fifteen by 24 points to 11. Several representative matches wero decided in othr places. The following results were forwarded by correspondents of the Herat,!):— Cambridge.—Having a bye in the Auckland senior competition, the Ponsonby team visited Cambridge on Saturday and provided a bright match with the local representative fifteen. A fast paco was set in the first spell and at half-time Cambridge led 11 —8. However, the visiting backs exerted themselves in the second half and added Ifi points to their tally. Cambridge was first to score, when Hardy dived over from a five-yards scrum, but the points were evened when Frankham kicked a penalty goal. A stylish run by 1). Solomon left the field standing, and he sent Ramsay over for Ponsonby's first try. Jamieson converted. The score was evened again when Smith gathered in from a cross-kick and sent a long pass to Hewitt, who scored and then added the extra points. Cambridge took the lend when K. Peake punted over Hook's head and, following up, gathered the ball and sped from the quarter-lino to score. The Ponsonby team was slightly re-arranged in the second spell, and immediately W. Carson scored from a solid rush. Jamieson converted. Ponsonby's star back was Jamieson, who was responsible for the next points, although Hay touched town. Hook converted. The whole back line was included in a try which came soon afterwards, Hook scoring. In a junior representative game for the Clark Cup Waipa defeated Cambridge by 14 points to 8. Morrinsville. —Possibly the two strongest teams met in the Waikdto Rugby Union's Finlay Cup competition on Saturday. The pame was the most exciting for four years, in spite of the fact that Morrinsville had been predominating in major matches. Mataniata gave the holder of the cup a shock and led at half-time by 8 points to 3. Tries for Matamata were scored by Germann and Settle, the latter converting his try. Just before half-time the Morrinsville forwards worked down and Faulkner got over wide out. In the second half the Matamata backs took up a surprisingly defensive attitude, and let Morrinsville do the attacking. Then A. McLeay, a promising forward, opened up play, and the ball went along the chain of Matamata backs and Cole went over and scored a brilliant try, which Settle converted. From this onward the home forwards dominated play and tries came in quick succession by Cameron. Aitken (2) and T. (,'larkin, one being converted by Cameron. Hamilton.—Two matches in the local interunion competition were decided at Rugby Park, the standard of play being Inferior to that in recent games. On No. 1 ground Marist defeated Frankton by 1!) points to 12. After 10 minutes of forward play, with Frankton defending, Marist's halfback, Mills, cut in to score. A spell of ragged play followed, until W. Cassidy and Tetzlaff handled for a Marist forward, Ryan, to come up smartly and score. • Soon afterwards \V. Frankton's forwards then showed to advantage, Ferguson following up smartly to score an unconverted try. A minute later Dempsey ran through the defence on his own and scored a try for Marist, which W. Cassidy converted. Frankton's backs then combined in a movement, lleeps 'sioring. Before the game concluded Frankton secured a further three points from an unconverted try scored by Kelly. In tile second game at Rugby Park Technical Old Hoys defeated Taupiri West by 25 points to 3. Tries were scored for Technical by Goosman (2), Pardington, liuick and Rae. Partington converted two tries, Clough one and St. George dropped a field goal. For Taupiri West Hood scored an unconverted try. Juniors: Frankton, Rovers, 0. Pukekohe-Franklin.—Onewhero won the championship this season by beating White Star at Onewhero by 9 points to 5. Onewhero now has 16 championship points. White Star and Old Boys having 10. The winners were quite the better team, while White Star was handicapped through two of its players being injured. In the only other senior game played, Old Boys beat Te Kohanga by 12 points to 0. Waikare. —-Representative Trial Game: A team, 14, B team, 13. Juniors: Woodleigh, 19, Waerenga, 0; Ohinowai, 0, Huntly Old Boys, 21. Schools: Waerenga, 30, Te Kauwh'ata, 9; Ohinewai, 20, Itangiriri, 0. Waluku. —-Seniors: Olaua, 11, Aka AkaWaipipi Combined, 3; City, 15, Maoris, 3. in a curtain-raiser College Rifles thirds beat City juniors by 13 to 11. Taupiri.—A bright and interesting game was witnessed at Ngaruawahia, when the Morrinsville junior representatives defeated Taupiri in the Clarke Cup match by I<l points to 5. The local team started at a very fast paco and for the greater part of the first '.spell had the opposition hemmed in its own half. The half-time score was G —s in Morrinsvilie's favour. The packs were evenly matched except in set scrums, where Morrinsville was superior. Bell, Solley and Davidson were the pick of a back line. The losers were good o"Jy individually, lacking the combination of the cup holders. Tapp, McGaughran and Burke'were safe both on defence and attack, while of the forwards, Bailey, Quinn, McQueen and Whitten were the pick. Bell (2), Solley and Davidson scored for Morrinsville and Davidson converted one try. Tapp scored and McQaughran converted for Taupiri. In a curtain-raiser between the Hamilton third grade representatives and a Taupiri junior team the former won by 19 —5.

Whangarei.— Two senior championship matches and | erlect weather attracted a record attendance at Kensington Park. Tho large crowd was not disappointed, as it saw Hikurangi win the senior championship for the second year in succession, by defeating ».ild Boys by 15 to 10 after a very interesting game. Tho brilliancy of T. Conway, tho halfback, was largely responsible for Ilikurangfs win. This player converted ono try, kicked a penalty goal and potted a fino goal from tho field, Brydon and Campbell each scored a try. For Old Boys Smith and F,_ Collins scored, Tapper converting both. Tho real thrill of the day, however, was tho game played simultaneously on No. 2 ground, where the Kia Toa Maori team defeated City by 28 points to ID. Had Jlikurangi been beaten by Old Boys, then Kia Toa's win would have placed both teams level, but as it is, Kia Toa becomes the runncr-up, being two points behind Hikurangi. An outstanding display was given by It. White, tho Maoris' centre-three-quarter. This player is the star back in North Auckland and Rugby enthusiasts consider he is v.ell fitted for bigger football. Tho tour to take place this year by the North Auckland representatives should bring him under further notice. lie scored 10 of Kia Toa's 28 points, by obtaining two very spectacular tries and converting five. Tries were also scored by M. Mahunga, Nuki Williams, J. Rika and C. White. For City tries were scored by Paul, J. Harrison, J. Roos and T. Potter, Roos converting two, and G. Rotorua.—An exciting and interesting game was witnessed at Arawa Park, when Rotorua (holder) met Galatea (challenger) in a match for the Parata Cup. Galatea commenced in promising manner, but neither the forwards nor the backd displayed any cleverness ill their movements and Rotorua won hy a wide margin. The visiting team had a number of excellent chances to secure points, 7 hut overconfuience spoiled the chance. Rotorua played a consistently good game and delighted a large crowd of spectators with clever, heady movements. The homo team won by 23 points to 0. Whitianga.—White Cup competition: Mercury Pay, 11, Coromandel, 3. Whakatane.—Thorn was a good attendance at the Domain at the opening of the second round of the Whakatane liugby Union's coinpetition. The senior game between City and Poroporo was below the usual standard, althougb interesting because of the evenness of the teams. ,T. Dar ( {avUle. —The two leading teams in the Northern Wairoa Kugby Union's senior competition, Northern Star and Kaihu, met at Kugby Park, a hard-fought game resulting in a win for Kaihu by (i lo 3. This places Kaihu on level terms with Northern Star, and, providing bcth teams beat their respective opponent, Ruawai and Southern, in the next competition games, which will be the concluding matches of the final round, they will have to play off. At half-time the score was oven at three points each. Right on time good forward play forced Northern Star on defence and the ball went to Osbaldiston on the wing, who dashed over. In the other eenior game Ruawai defeated Southern by 5 points to 0. Giving lo two junior lepresentativo teams playing away at the Bay of Islands and Paparoa no junior matches were played. The senior game was for tho Poland Memorial Clip and the junior match for tho Sharebrokers' Cup. Thames was successful in the three games. From a penalty kick in the senior game, Strange goalod for Thames after the bail had hit the post and bounced over. The Paoroa forwaids carried play to Thames' line, C'arrick working his way over. Thames was penalised for lifting in the scrum, Vedder goaling. A breakaway by Gloyn and Clotworthy carried the ball 75 yards and the forwards continued with the rush for Corbett to score, making the half-time score: Paeroa, 9; Thames, 3. Tauranga.—The first Rugby representative match of the season was played here for the Parata Cup, a Bay of Plenty competition, when the Tauranga and Te Puke teams met in perfect weather conditions. The teams were evenly matched, the contest being mainly confined to the forwards. Twenty minutes after the start M. Ifartnett scored from a loose rush and M. Gardiner converted, giving Tauranga an early lead. Ten minutes later Morkel kicked a penalty goal and shortly afterwards M. Taugitu touched down for Tauranga.
