THE LEAGUE CODE

TItIAL GAME PLAYED STANDARD DISAPPOINTS BACKS LACK COMBINATION Tho A and B trial game played at (Jnrlaw Park as a curtain-raiser to tho North and South Island Rugby League fixture was disappointing from a playing point of view. Moth teams were evenly matched and the score 16 to l<i in favour of the 11 team was a good indication of tho run of play. 'J here was a lack of combination among the hacks, although some good forward play was witnessed. A feature of tho game was tho brilliant play of Kay, at centre three-quarter, for Hie B team. He made many beautiful openings and showed a lot, of speed in running straight. Kerr played a sound game at fullback and did h lot of useful work in defence. Jlis kicking left little to be desired. L. Shultz did not get many chances at fivoeighths, but did a lot of useful work. His tackling was very sound. Among the forwards, Breed played a good game and is a fine type of front row forward. Clark, also a front row forward, in tho R team played well. Serra, tho Canterbury forward, was also prominent. Among the A team Watene stood out for some fine all round work. Gault and Donald were also prominent, while Flanagan played a good game in the loose. Stoekley, at fiveeighths, and L. Scott, on the wing, were the best of the A backs. Early in tho game Breed scored two tries in quick succession for tho 15 team. The A team started a nice passing bout in which Stoekley was prominent, and Riley made an .opening for Loader to score. A fow minutes later, Kerr kicked a (rood penalty goal for tho R team. Good play round tho scrum by E. Scott gave the B team's barks another chance and Schultz gained good ground before sending Trevathan over. Half-time came with tho score:—l! team, 13; A Team, 3. Tho teams were rearranged nfter tho interval. Hallornn replaced Powell, at halfback for the A team, and Wilkie went on to tho wing in place of L. Scott. E. Scott, tho B team's halfimck, received a cut over the eye and was replaced by O'Connor, of the West Coast. Flay among the backs was brighter and Kay made a beautiful opening from which O'Connor scored. Then Watene just failed lo score after a strong run through the defence. Telford, however, touched down between tho posts and Stoekley converted for the A team. A few minutes later Wilkie raced down the sideline and passed to Gault, who scored for Halloran to convert. The game ended with the score:—R team, 16; A team, 13. Mr. M. Wctherill was referee.
